Ever since choosingĀ to live a vegan lifestyle we have been wholly disappointed with the array of cow’s milk alternatives on offer at our belovedĀ supermarkets šŸ™‚ Without going into detail you’re basically paying through the nose for a product which is primarily water! If you’re lucky you’ll get 3% almonds in a commercial almond mylk. You need half a carton of the stuff just to make a (pretty bad) cup of tea.

The Dairy-Free Aisle is Growing!

As always, big business is jumping on the band wagon and profiting from those of us who choose to lead dairy-free and vegetarian lifestyles. Whether you do it for health reasons (of which there are many) or maybe it’s because you have compassion for your fellow animals, the popularity of Veganism and vegetarianismĀ  is growing apace … and with it the volume of dairy-free alternatives on the shelves.Dairy Free Aisle

Depressingly, the money men see a huge opportunity to cash in. It’s a real shame every nuance of our capitalist life appears to be tied to profit and the requirement to make ever increasing rates of profit just to stay “in the game” …. it is a fundamentally flawed system and is completely unsustainable, the proof of which is being borne out in these times which we live. The pursuit of endless material gain is not something which fits in with the Earth’s ecosystem!

Home-Made 25% Almond Mylk …

Anyway, getting back on point, it didn’t take us long to realise that the supermarket solution was not the answer. Devangi already knew that we could make our own almond mylk and that’s what we did. We never looked back and the rest, as they say, is history. Our mylk contains approximately 25% almonds and is beautifully rich and creamy. When we do find ourselves having to resort to the inferior commercial products it just reinforces our resolveĀ to continue to produceĀ the home-made version which we enjoy on a daily basis.

Numerous Health Benefits

There are so many healthy reasons to drink almond mylk. Almonds are one of the most nutritious nuts; they’re high in protein and packed full of vitamin E which is a great antioxidant, is good for the immune system, the skin and the eyes. Here’s some more reasons to eat almonds on a daily basis:

  • Rich in monounsaturated fats – linked to reduced risk of heart disease.
  • High in phosphorus,Ā  copper andĀ  vitamin B.
  • Contain manganese – essential for healthy bone development and helps to regulate blood sugar.
  • High in magnesium – required for muscle, organ and nerve function, blood glucose control, and regulating blood pressure.
  • High in calcium and iron – bone development and red blood cell formation.

The high calcium content in almond mylk makes it a perfect substitute for cow’s milk. Not only does the human body find it very difficult to absorb the calcium in cow’s milk (especially pasteurised) but there is a growing body of evidence to show that drinking cow’s milk actually reduces calcium levels in your body; even though cow’s milk does contain good levels of calcium! It’s pretty simple science and all to do with the acidifying nature of animal protein. This article describes it well.

For Me Personally …

I can honestly say that going vegan is the best thing I ever did. I initially did it for ethical reasons after seeing the way animals are treated in these agri-factories. It brought me to tears … and I grew up up on a small-holding in deepest West Wales; we took cows to the slaughter house and we ate the pigs we reared. So I knew the reality … but it’s very different now.

We chose veganism because we cannot allow our hard earned cash to be exchanged for products who’s production has caused undue suffering to animals. It is the one small thing we can do to show true compassion for our fellow sentient beings with whom we share this beautiful Earth (Bhumi).
